CSoP - The first round-table session on Research in practice in architecture are held on Friday 16 June at DogA

In response to the positive feedback to the CSoP 2 Symposium in Oslo the Norwegian Centre for Design and Architecture (DogA) and the Research Centre for Architecture and Tectonics have partnered up to address the development of research in practice in Norway in a systematic manner through round-table discussions with invited practices. The aim is to provide the opportunity to pursue and discuss these questions in a series of events that aim to engage practices of different sizes, structures and needs. Preliminary roundtables are held to identify key themes to be discussed in subsequent theme-specific roundtables. The first track will focus on architectural practice. The second track will focus on design practice. An eventual third track will explore potential interfaces, collaborations and convergences between architecture and design practices.

Participants included Erik Jacobsen (Kontur), John Arne Bjerknes (Nordic), Magne Wiggen (MMW), Julia Schlegel (Snøhetta), Ingerid Helsing Almaas (Arkitektur N), Einar Bjarki Malmquist (Arkitektur N),Tor Inge Hjemdal (DogA), Benedicte Wildhagen (DogA), Søren S. Master graduate Matteo Lomaglio reveices one of the prestiguous Oslo Research [Kunnskap Oslo] awards - 08 June 2017

Jury Report:

The project represents a thorough and innovative work in planning a 24-hour building in downtown Oslo. The building is located in the north-east corner of Slottsparken. The design of the building itself is based on extensive analyses of how the the wider area is used by different people at different times of the day and which programmes and features existing in the current area. Lomaglio analyses data on running and cycling from exercise apps. Data upload services provide information about where tourists travel through the images they store. Further analysis of public transport availability and opening hours in shops also helps to complement the image of the area the building is proposed to be located within.

The innovation in the project lies both in the breadth of information that was assembled to inform the building and adapt it to the environment, as well as the needs of the users and in the digital aids the author uses to analyse the information and link the design of the building itself to the knowledge he has gathered. The result of the project is both a specific building design and a method that can have transfer value for urban development more generally.

Booklaunch: Grounds and Envelopes - Reshaping the Built Environment

Co-authored by Prof. Dr. Michael U. Hensel and Jeffrey P. Turko and published by Routledge 'Grounds and Envelopes provides a source of vision for the revitalisation of ground and envelope as spatial elements that can inform the search for embedded locally specific architectures, this book collects essays and projects that each contributes a particular element to what might constitute an integrated and richly nuanced approach to spatial organisation. With an abundance of built and un-built key projects available, it is now possible to outline the contours of a new discourse. This book initiates a new beginning in this direction so that architecture can partake in the creation of heterogeneous space and culturally, socially and environmentally sustainable built environments. The book includes works by: Paulo Mendes da Rocha, RCR Arquitectes, Weiss / Manfredi, Peter Eisenman, Foreign Office Architects, Alvaro Siza, Eduardo Souto de Moura, MVRDV, Bernard Tschumi, OCEAN, R&Sie(n), Toyo Ito, Enric Miralles and Carme Pinós, Kengo Kuma, Cloud 9, Diller, Scofidio and Renfro, et al.

The Return of the Living Bridges Exhibition at Galleri AHO

Relentless global urbanization and the related densification of cities yields once again a strong interest in versatile multi-functional buildings that are able to provide for a broad range of uses and activities in order to cope with a multitude of simultaneous needs and shortage of space and resources. For this reason a series of exhibitions at Galleri AHO will focus on the thematic of the multi-functional building. The exhibition at Galleri AHO brings together a series of remarkable historical projects, such as the London Bridge, the habitable bridges of the Ile de la Cité in Paris, the Khaju Bridge in Isfahan, Ponte Vecchio in Florence, and so on, as well as recent schemes by Bernard Tschumi for Lausanne, Zaha Hadid for London, MVRDV and OCEAN + Urban Office for Düsseldorf. Four current schemes by the Advanced Computational Design Studio for the river Akerselva in Oslo complete the roster of projects.
